2024 Olympics: Babajide wishes Falcons victory against Brazil
UCDA Tenerife of Spain forward, Rinsola Babajide, has wished the Super Falcons victory against Brazil in their Paris 2024 Olympics group opener today.

The Super Falcons are back in the women’s football of the Olympic games following a 16-year break, having last participated in 2008 at Beijing, China.

Today’s game will be the third encounter between these two sides, and their second clash at the Olympics.

Brazil defeated the Super Falcons 4-3 after extra time at the 1999 FIFA Women’s World Cup. This was followed by a comfortable 3-1 victory in the group stage of the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

As things stand, Nigeria will be gunning for revenge against Brazil and Babajide who is not taking part in the 2024 Olympics has wished the Super Falcons victory against the South American nation.

“Good luck to the Super Falcons who start their Olympics campaign today, I’ll be cheering the girliessss on all the wayyy, from home, let’s gooooo!!  #TEAMNIGERIA,” she posted on her X account.

The Super Falcons proved their credentials once again as a major powerhouse in African football, beating Cameroon and South Africa in the last two rounds of qualification for the Olympics ticket, which they sealed with an aggregate 1-0 win over the Bayana Bayana in the final round.

Pumped up by their impressive performance at the 2023 Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, the Randy Waldrum-led side showed that they are fearless as it was glaring against Canada, Australia and New Zealand, despite being the least ranked team in the group.

Three valuable points will be up for grabs on Thursday, when the Falcons take on Brazil at the Stade Matmut Atlantique in Bordeaux, France, in their first Group C game.

After making three consecutive appearances at the Olympics between 2000 and 2008, the Falcons were absent from the next three editions of the tournament.

Despite their long hiatus, the Nigerian side is the only African team to have advanced to the knockout stages of the competition, crashing out in the quarter-finals of the 2004 Athens Olympics.

On the other hand, Brazil have not only qualified for every edition of the Olympics but have also reached the knockout stages every single time. The South Americans have five semi-final appearances to their name, and two silver medals.
