….As PETAN pushes Africa-led energy transition strategy
The Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB), Engr. Felix Omatsola Ogbe, has called for deeper collaboration among African nations to strengthen local content and unlock sustainable growth in the continent’s energy sector.
Ogbe made the call at the 10th edition of the Sub-Saharan African International Petroleum Exhibition and Conference (SAIPEC 2026) in Lagos, themed “Africa’s Local Content Collaboration Strategy.” He stressed that Africa’s energy future depends on coordinated action among governments, regulators, private investors and local communities.
“Our efforts cannot be siloed if we are to achieve real progress and consolidate our gains,” he said, noting that isolated national policies would not deliver the scale required to attract global capital.
Ogbe explained that Nigeria’s local content policy has evolved from increasing indigenous participation to building capacity and strengthening regulations. He urged African countries to leverage frameworks such as the Brazzaville Accord to harmonise regulations, remove bottlenecks and make regional energy projects more competitive.
Meanwhile, Chairman of the Petroleum Technology Association of Nigeria (PETAN), Engr. Wole Ogunsanya, advocated an Africa-led energy transition that prioritises access, affordability and reliability, noting that over 600 million Africans lack electricity.
He said the continent should not abandon hydrocarbons but responsibly develop existing resources while gradually integrating cleaner energy solutions. Ogunsanya highlighted the growth of indigenous firms across Nigeria’s energy value chain, attributing progress to consistent local content policies.
However, he cautioned that sustaining the gains would require policy stability, access to financing, contract sanctity and stronger collaboration among stakeholders. He added that future investment flows would depend on regulatory clarity, competitive fiscal terms and bankable projects, urging stakeholders to shift focus from dialogue to implementation.
