Shettima: Nigeria must revitalise railway system to be Africa’s logistics hub

Vice-President Kashim Shettima says Nigeria can only sustain its position as Africa’s logistics hub by reviving and revitalising its railway system.
Shettima spoke on Monday in Abuja while declaring open the second international railway conference.
He urged stakeholders to embrace stronger networking, partnerships, and collaboration, stressing that harnessing the vast opportunities in the railway sector is a serious task.
The vice-president, however, noted that the drive for renewal is what inspired the railway projects and modernisation efforts under President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
“Distinguished ladies and gentlemen, the challenge ahead of us is to lead this race as the logistics hub of Africa by reviving and revitalising our railway services,” Shettima said.
“We must be conscious of our place as the anchor of West Africa’s economy and home to the continent’s largest population as we prepare for the adoption of modern railway infrastructure.”
The vice-president added that the new drive inspired projects such as the Kano–Maradi railway modernisation, which he described as a strategic gateway for trade under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
