Rivers enrolls 36,855 people in contributory health scheme

Rivers State Government says it has enrolled 36,855 people in its newly launched State Contributory Health Protection Programme, RIVCHPP.

The Acting Executive Secretary of RIVCHPP, Dr Vetty Agala, disclosed this at a one-day Basic Health Care Provision Fund, BHCPF, Implementation Sensitisation meeting in Port Harcourt, weekend.

Agala noted that the sensitisation of residents of the state on the implementation of the Basic Healthcare Provision Fund was to emphasis its importance in repositioning the state and nation’s health care system.

She said: “What we want people to know is that Basic Healthcare Provision Fund is one of the plans that the Rivers State Contributory Health Protection Programme is implementing.

“This plan is for the poor and the vulnerable in our society. This includes, pregnant women, people living with disabilities, widows, children under five, adults over 60. In also covers people with chronic illnesses like HIV and Sickle cell.”

Agala noted that the programme is not essentially for the poor and those with terminal sicknesses, adding that individuals and families without underlying ailments can also access the programme.

She noted that it costs only N15,000 for an individual to be registered into the programme, adding that between June and August that 36,855 people have been enrolled.

Agala said: “We also want people to know that this programme is not just for the poor and vulnerable people, civil servants both at the state and LGA levels can also access it through the former sector plan.

“Before the end of this year we will be able to register our civil servants. Those in the informal sector can access it. We have individual packages for N15,000, per year and you can access all medical services common to us.

“36,588 persons across the 23 LGA have been registered in the scheme. Access to care started on the 1st of June. The second set will start accessing health care from the 1st of September.”
