Edo govt reconnects to BEDC after power shutdown dispute

The Edo State Government has begun the process of reconnecting to the Benin Electricity Distribution Company for the supply of electricity.
This is coming five years after the state government broke BEDC’s monopoly in the state by supporting the construction of Ossiomo Power, an electricity generation and distribution firm.
Director General of the Edo State Electrification Agency, Saturday Egbadon, confirmed the switch on Monday, said that electricity has been restored to some streetlights and government buildings in the state, adding that the process was still ongoing.
He said, “I can confirm that the Edo State government has begun the process of reconnecting to BEDC.
“Some street lights and government buildings have already been connected, while the processing is still ongoing.”
PUNCH Online gathered that the switch over to BEDC by the state Government was due to the shutdown of Ossiomo Power since September 1st over the ownership tussle between Ossiomo Power and its Chinese partners, Jiangsu Communication Clean Energy Technology.
Ossiomo Power generates 95MW of electricity, which it supplies to government buildings, Edo government house, Edo NUJ secretariat, private organisations, streetlights, amongst others.
