Akwa Ibom Gov’t Commits To Grassroots Sports Development

The Akwa Ibom State commissioner for sports, Elder Paul Bassey, has highlighted the significance of grassroots sports development, assuring the effective implementation of sports policy as a crucial element of the governor Umo Eno-led administration’s Arise Agenda.

He emphasised the need for enhanced support and sponsorship of local sports initiatives to ensure that talented athletes are discovered and nurtured, aligning with the governor’s vision for the sports sector.

Commissioner Bassey made these remarks during the opening ceremony of the Elder Udeme Ottong Inter-ward Football Tournament at Annang Peoples Primary School (APPS), Utu-Abak, in the Abak local government area. In the opening match, Abak Urban Ward 1 triumphed over Abak Urban Ward 2 with a score of 2-1.

The commissioner praised Rt. Hon. Otong, Speaker of the State House of Assembly, for sponsoring the tournament, describing the initiative as “a strategic move to engage youth productively and unearth hidden sports talents throughout the communities, providing a platform that could guide them towards advancing their careers.”

Elder Bassey noted that such initiatives reflect Governor Eno’s commitment to empowering youth and fostering economic development through sports under the Arise Agenda.

He expressed optimism that standout players from the tournament could achieve international recognition, bringing pride to both Akwa Ibom and Nigeria.

“I would like to commend Rt. Honourable Udeme Ottong for sponsoring this tournament for the youth of Abak. This is a remarkable platform you have created through this competition for young footballers in the area. Our mandate as the sports ministry is to monitor grassroots sports activities and identify exceptionally talented athletes for proper grooming and exposure.

“I am genuinely pleased that the Speaker has embraced the vision of His Excellency, Governor Umo Eno, by funding and sponsoring programmes and competitions that will positively impact our people’s lives.

“This football competition is a key component of the Arise Agenda, and I firmly believe that outstanding players will emerge from this event, evolving into global superstars who will bring honour to our nation,” he stated.

He encouraged political leaders, as well as private and corporate organisations, to emulate Speaker Otong’s generosity by supporting grassroots sports development in their respective areas, thereby providing worthwhile platforms for the youth to showcase their God-given talents. He believes this could facilitate their entry into the multi-billion-dollar global sporting industry, enhance their living standards, and contribute to the economic growth of both the state and the nation.
